Very good / Good condition for the age of this firearm. Bores are dark and pitted, and the lock up has a little play in it. Stock and forearm have a fair amount of handling wear, and the metal has patinaed. Stock has a large crack that goes all the way across the grip and the and tang of the firearm. Serial Number: 440273

E. Remington & Sons was the precursor to Remington Arms legacy, which was renamed back in 1888. Manufactured between 1873-1888, this side by side would be sitting along side a stagecoach driver on his way to make a delivery. Barrel is marked "52", presumed to be Well Fargo's rack number. Marked on both sides of the stock "W.F. & Co. Guard Express" and "Wells Fargo & Co's Express, S.F. Cal.". Truly a remarkable piece of history, and any highway robber would think twice trying rob this stagecoach.
This firearm is also stamped near the end of the bottom tang, "Liddle & Kaeding". The business venture of Robert Liddle and Charles Van Buren Kaeding, becoming one of the largest firearms retailers in the San Francisco area.
This E. Remington & Sons Model 1873 features a 20" barrel, "Hammer Lifter" break lever, exposed hammers, double trigger, single bead sighting, and a checkered walnut stock and forearm.
